not even hours after Thomas Benoit would finish his meeting with dahlia goode, he would receive a ping from the region's HEAD RANGER to meet him in the borders. ollie had secured the location of a few league officials — namely, and most importantly to Ollie, Caleb Harcourt — but there was still several from his roster that had been missing.

[break][break] ollie hadn't wanted to come to this conclusion. it was morbid. but he was getting desperate. he could think of nothing else.

[break][break] he'd been checking his comms perodically to see if any of the rangers that he'd sent out to scout for his sister or PENELOPE LIVY would turn up, but nothing yet. it was making him exceedingly anxious, like a scratch he couldn't quite itch. and he couldn't just sit still, thinking that the world was about to end.

[break][break] he swallowed thickly.

[break][break] at the precipice at one of the rifts that had quickly come to know as THE BORDER, the head ranger waited for the former elite four to show.

[break][break] if they couldn't find their friends in the living world, then maybe they could find them in the dead.

Following his meeting with dahlia goode, and the beginning of his partnership with Tapu Koko, Thomas got a message from Ollie. After sending him a message telling him he was on his way, Thomas practically gunned it to Mt. Pyre.

Flying in on the back of his faithful Hydreigon, Thomas made his way to the rift leading to The Border.

"Ollie, good to see you again.", Thomas greeted the Head Ranger. "Be careful, last time I was here, a Shard of Yveltal was running rampant. Trapped some wandering souls, seemingly as bait. Our group managed to repel the Yveltal Shard, and free the trapped souls that could be freed.", Thomas warned the Head Ranger.

His sincerest hope was that none of the missing people ended up here. The thought of DESIREE BLOOMS dying after storming out of his house horrified him to no end.

There was only one way to find out, for sure.

[break][break] Ollie couldn't help the sigh of relief he'd let out when he'd seen the former Elite Four cresting across the horizon, on his familiar Hyreigon. He thought something might have been different about the man, now, but maybe it was just the sense of urgency that they both shared.

[break][break] As the conversation shifted to Yveltal, Ollie nodded. In the back of his mind, he thought about the conversation Laurence Anderson once shared with him about the Judge, Jury and Executioner. Did Thomas Benoit feel ties here too? Or were he and Yveltal just strangers?

[break][break] "How'd your meeting with Dahlia go?" he asked instead, as they stepped deeper into the rift. Ollie didn't have a Sygna Suit, which meant their time here was limited. They would have to make the best of it while they could.

"It went well. Ended up being partnered with Tapu Koko.", Thomas revealed to Ollie.

Thomas showed the Cherish Ball containing the Island Guardian bestowed upon him by the Commissioner. "Had to battle for their approval. Fitting, considering what Tapu Koko represents.", Thomas added.

Though Thomas had a Sygna Suit himself, he realized that Ollie likely didn't have one of his own. "Shall we?", he asked the Head Ranger, waiting for him to be ready for this trip.

Thomas had to question whether or not he even had a chance, at this point. Perhaps he had to do more to prove himself to Tapu Koko? Perhaps Koko wasn't going to bestow their blessing, after the fallout with Selena Desmarais.

"War. War is coming, and we need to be prepared to fight tooth and nail.", Thomas answered.

Thomas stepped into the rift leading to the Border. The Kalosian peered around for a moment, looking for any signs of Yveltal's presence.

The last thing they needed was to walk into an ambush.

heavy fogs settle where the image of kyle was. wisps of spirits inhabit the blanket of white, dispersing as the voice calls out the champion.

seemingly distracted, kyle doesn't appear to notice both ollie and thomas when they approached, only turning once his name was uttered in the complete silence of border's barren wastelands.

he blinks, then waves.

"oi!" he calls back. "what are you guys doing here?!"

he doesn't move to approach and remains on his spot for them to approach. whether it was him being unable to move through the border as freely as others were or kyle simply not willing to be bothered to move can't be ascertained.

The sight of Kyle's spirit caused Thomas' heart to sink. It validated the worst news, the news that neither he, nor noah faber wanted to believe. That somehow, the Champion had fallen to the machinations of Elisabeth Fiorelli.

"Kyle.", Thomas uttered, his voice filled with despair.

"We-we came looking for our friends. They disappeared overnight, and we came to make sure they didn't die.", Thomas uttered.

The confirmation that Kyle died was bad enough. The idea that DESIREE BLOOMS, Navy, John Sullivan, Alexei Ivanov, and the others had died to would've broken Thomas completely.

[break][break] There are so many things he wants to ask kyle lopez. Wants to ask him what happened up there on that mountain, wants to ask how he saved MATIAS SILPH, wants to ask what MATIAS SILPH meant when he said the answer to everything was Kyle.

surprise was the expression he shows.

"oh. that sucks." he calls back. "i haven't seen any of them. this place is too big anyways."

in any case, there was no guarantee that the fragment they were talking to had the sentience of the personality it represented. had it been the case, a reflection of what was once was does not carry over memories it shouldn't have.

"i know you guys are worried, but shouldn't you have a bit more trust in them?" he further prods.

kyle turns to thomas. "if your friends are anything like livy, then they're fine." his tone shifts to a more complacent feel. "characters like that don't die easily."

The answer Kyle gave them was an uncertain one. While he claimed not to have seen them, the fact that the size of the place left that in question did little to relieve Thomas.

"Kyle, I wish I could be that optimistic. But with all of the known, and even unknown elements assailing the Region, how do we truly know?", Thomas asked. "But I really hope you're right."

That wasn't to mention how Kyle, of all people, ended up dead. Someone who Thomas considered practically immortal, given his abilities. The champion of champions. And yet, thanks to Rocket's machinations, here he was.

"Buddy, I'm terrified.", he confessed. Ting Lu's influence exacerbated his already prevalent fears of losing those close to him. Especially before he got the chance to apologize to Desiree. "I don't want to lose anyone else."

Thomas acknowledge the reality that this conflict would only continue to take. That there was no end to the constant death. And yet, it still hurt all the same.

Disappointment floods through him when kyle lopez admits that he hasn't seen them either. But in that, there is a bit of optimism too. Because if Kyle hasn't seen them, and Kyle is dead, that means...

[break][break] It isn't often that Ollie gets frustrated and even less that he shows his frustration. But these are different times, and even more special circumstances.

[break][break] He thinks about the way that Josh Devlin had sobbed at the former Champion's death, and thinks about the way that MATIAS SILPH had practically called him his everything.

[break][break] "You died. I - " He swallows thickly, as if he's afraid to say what he thinks next. "None of us thought you would die either."
